Facts about what smoking can do for your teeth:

  • Smoking can stain your teeth due to the nicotine and tar in the tobacco, heavy smokers sometimes complain that their teeth are often brownish after years of smoking
  • Smoking can also lead to gum disease due to a large build up of bacterial plaque and because smoking can cause a reduced amount of oxygen in the bloodstream then gums which are infected don’t heal as quickly
  • Smoking can be one of the main causes of mouth cancer
  • People who smoke may find they are more likely to have bad breath

What can one of your dentists do for you?

Your dentist will be able to carry out regular dental examinations to check your teeth and gums and regularly check for oral mouth cancer so that any signs can be spotted early.

People who smoke are more likely to have stained teeth and therefore may need an appointment with your dentist.
